Location information:
The city of Essaouira, located about 150km West of Marrakech, was only built during the 18th Century. Mohammed III chose Mogador as his key location and hired a French engineer, Theodore Cornut and several other European architects and technicians, to build the fortress.
Originally called “Souira” “the small fortress”, the name then came “Es-Saouira”, “the beautifully designed”.
With the completely intact Medina (old town), surrounded by fortified walls, and long, white beaches, Essaouira is regarded as one of the most beautiful towns on the Atlantic. Traders and visitors have always been drawn by the charms of Essaouira, from sugar and spice exporters to pirates.
Wind is a constant here. As a result of the huge differences between sea and land temperatures, the north easterly trade wind is accelerated by thermal action and blows continually. It's almost as if it never stops to catch its breath!
The bay in front of Essaouira is almost closed by the large island of Mogador, making it a relatively peaceful harbour and offering protection against the strong winds of the area.
