Location information:
The dreamland that is Mauritius; mountain peaks, magnificent palm-fringed beaches, colourful coral reefs, shimmering azure lagoons, and wind year round.
What more could Kitesurfers and Windsurfers wish for?
Known to the Arabs as early as the 10th century, but officially discovered in 1505 by the Portuguese navigator Pedro
Mascarenhas, the island was occupied successively by the Dutch (1598-1712) and the French (1715-1810), and was ceded to Great Britain in 1814 through the Treaty of Paris. On 12 March 1968, Mauritius became Independent. Republic Day was proclaimed on 12 March 1992.
Mauritius is located in the Indian Ocean 800km east of Madagascar and 2,000km off the closest point on the African coast. Mauritius is mostly of volcanic formation and is almost entirely surrounded by coral reefs, forming natural, crystal clear lagoons.
A coastal plain, widest in the north, rises sharply to a 1,500 ft high plateau bordered by three mountain ranges - the Black River Range, the Grand Port Range, and the Moka Range. The longest river is the Grand River South East, at approx 25 miles in length.
Winter on Mauritius is from June to September; this is when the trade winds are at their best, but even in the remaining months of the year, the trade winds still offer Windsurfers / Kitesurfers excellent conditions. From December to April, relatively heavy rain showers can be expected but they usually blow over quickly

Surf spots in Mauritius:
Mauritius is surf paradise. The main surf spots are concentrated near the surf school at the "Hotel Indian Resort". Surfing conditions for all levels of surfing:
Inside the Lagoon in front of the centre and the "Hotel Indian Resort":
- With big swell this wave breaks nicely, especially during high tide
- Good surf spot for surfing lessons
The "small reef" in front of the "Hotel Indian Resort":
- A wave that breaks on a sandy sea bed with rocks (no coral)
- A right-hand wave
- About 400 m from the beach
"One-eye" World famous left hand wave:
-
"One-eye" is a really fast and fat left hand wave - Expert surfers only!
- Breaks on a shallow coral reef with lots of sea-urchins and sometimes has serious currents
- "One-eye" is a symbol on the island, a wave respected by all hot local surfers, so if you want to surf there, you'd better be both good and tough
"Manawa":
- Located about 1 km out in front of the "Hotel Indian Resort" & the surf school,
- Spot for more advanced / expert surfers
- A very nice left-hand breaking wave on a shallow coral reef, not as fast as "One-eye" but "Manawa" still has a serious reputation
- Due to the strong currents and the distance, the use and presence of a rescue / safety boat is required during surf lessons / surf board hire
"Tamarin"
-
A perfect wave
- Located about 20 km north from the surf school, "Tamarin" is a very popular left, that breaks on a reef and then onto a sandy bottom
- Great for beginner surf lessons as long as you stay close to the sandy beach

A shopping and leisure paradise, Grand Bay also happens to be the area where Mauritians head for when they want a fun-filled night out (restaurants, bars and discos).
