Location information:

The Dominican Republic is 800 miles South-East of Miami and is bordered by Cuba to the west and Puerto Rico to the east.

Cabarete, the world famous water sports paradise, perfect for the active traveller, surfers, kite surfers & windsurfers is situated on the north coast of the Dominican Republic, about 14 miles from Puerto Plata airport (POP).

You can get around Cabarete easily on foot. Everything is closeby if you are staying in the town. Some resorts are located about a 5-minute drive from the centre of the town although a shuttle service is usually provided

If you are interested in Surfing in the Caribbean then Cabarete is the perfect spot for you. Equally good for just chilling out & relaxing in a friendly, laid back Caribbean environment.

• Normal wind direction is side / side-on-shore from the right
• Best months for wind: Jun – Sep: 80% of days Bft. force 4+
• 15 – 25 knots of wind most days
• Most used kite sizes: 9 – 14m
• Blows from midday on as the thermal kicks in to intensify the trade wind
• Not so favoured months: May, October, November
• Winter brings increased waves and rain
• Summer brings strong daily winds but smaller waves

Kitesurfing spots in Cabarete:

Kite Beach:

• A small bay in Cabarete with a wide soft sand beach protected by an outer reef 300 - 400m off shore
• Wind is side on shore
• The flat water inside the reef is ideal for learning to kite surf and freestyle, while the trade winds stack swell up on the reef making for good kite surf wave riding
• Can get crowded & sometimes complicated to launch the kite, but once in the water you'll have enough space if you don't ride right in front of the schools or hotels
• Local rules in force – make sure you know them!

La Policia:

• The closest kite surf spot to the kite centre (3 min walk)
• Kite spot for beginner kite surf lessons
• For advanced kitesurfers (min. level 3, up-wind riding) the conditions can be perfect
• You can reach this kite spot directly from the main beach of Cabarete
• Kite surfing at this spot is only allowed windward of the windsurfing zone

Bozo Beach:

• Suitable for all kite surfers:
• In the bay of Cabarete
• The water is flat / choppy
• Wind is side onshore
• Further offshore (c. 800m) there is a reef with breaking waves

Kite Bay:

• Between Bozo and Kite Beach
• Good alternative kite surf spot when the shore break on Bozo beach is too challenging for kitesurfers during the winter months

Lagoon:

• About 4 km upwind of the kitesurfing centre
• The wide sandy beach offers the perfect conditions for learning to kitesurf, flying kites on the beach
• Only space for 4 kitesurfers at the same time

Surf spots in Cabarete:

Playa Encuentro:

• The most famous surf spot on the north coast of the Dominican Republic – a true reef break but with something for every surfer:
• 15 mins drive from Cabarete, just 10mins from the Surf Camp Accommodation
  
• Due to the size of the waves, and the way they break (small white waves off the beach, then small breaking waves further out before a real peak of faster (sometimes tubing) waves, it is suitable for intermediate, advanced & expert surfers
• Starting your day with a surf session at Encuentro is probably one the nicest experiences in the world!

La Policia:

• A beach break just 5 mins walk from Club Mistral:
• Excellent for learning to surf
• Not even necessary to paddle out, beginner surfers can walk out over the sandbank to the break saving valuable energy for the first take-off
• Very safe, this spot is ideal for surf lessons & supervised surfing from the beach

Home Break:

• Only works with a very big north swell. When huge waves are passing the outer reef, the swell in the bay produces a nice little break on a sandbank just in front of the Club Mistral centre
• This break is perfect for learning to surf and advanced surfers

Bozo Beach:

• 5 mins walk from the Club Mistral centre, is a good spot for body boarding, and a beach break suitable for advanced surfers. For surfing beginners the wave at times can be too powerful, and breaks almost on the beach itself

• The closest airport to Cabarete is Puerto Plata Gregorio Luperon Airport (POP) on the North Coast of the island about 30 km west of Cabarete which is a 25 minute drive from Cabarete. Many charter flight companies fly to Puerto Plata (e.g. Thomson fly)
• Santiago (1 and a half hours away).
• Santo Domingo (5 hours away)
