Location information:

Sal is an island in the archipelago of Cape Verde, about 2 hours south of the Canary Islands by plane and 500km west of the coast of Senegal.

Sal belongs to the northern group of Cape Verde islands, called Barlavento and is one of the 3 sandy, eastern islands (Sal, Boavista and Maio) of the archipelago, with beautiful white sandy beaches and hardly any elevation.

Sal has the most tourism of all the Cape Verde islands, with excellent beaches, wind and waves making Sal a Mecca for Kitesurfers, Windsurfers & Surfers.

Sal is currently the only Cape Verde island to have an international airport. Cape Verde is a genuine rival to the more famous, more established destinations of Tenerife and Lanzarote.

• 4 km long, fine sandy bay is at the southern end of the island of Sal
• Good kite surfing conditions for beginners, advanced kiters and experts

The windsurfing zone starts directly in front of the windsurfing centre in front of the Belorizonte Hotel:

• This windsurf spot offers varying conditions. In front of the windsurf centre, the water is a little choppy with a slight shore-break
• Past the jetty, in-between a number of small fishing boats you will enter the Santa Maria speed track, where you can blast away to your heart's content or jibe across the turquoise water
• Further out, there is a swell for windsurfing wave novices
• The cross-offshore / side-shore wind from the left allows effortless upwind sailing to the various sections of the beach

Surf spots in Cape Verde:

Ponton:

• Located 5 mins walk from the Surf centre
• Ponton offers small waves right by the beach
• The waves remain nice and even when the rest of the bay is windy. Works better from April to November (low season)
• The left part of the Surf spot (looking from the beach) has some rocks and very little water at low tide
• The right part, closer to the jetty, is perfect for beginner surfers to paddle out, and get their first surfing experiences on small waves breaking on a sandy sea bed without any current
• A favourite local surf spot at sunset
• Ideal for learning to surf & surf lessons, especially at high tide

Punta Sino:

• Good waves most of the winter, from October till May
• Located 10mins walk downwind from the Surf centre
• Combines great wave riding on the left of the wreck (beware of currents and rocks), and a very special surfing spot right behind the point (right of the wreck, towards Ponta Preta)
• Special because this spot can offer a nice beach break with a wave that allows you to surf very close and parallel to the beach, with a sandy sea bed
• Sometimes there is a strong current at Punta Sino, but it has the great advantage of pushing you alongside the beach, which does require some paddling at the break, but keeps surfers close to the shore at all times
• Once the wave is ridden, surfers get on the beach, and walk up to the peak, before entering the water again
• Depending on the size of the waves, the Surf centre's rescue boat can be used to bring surfers out past the breakers – what Luxury Surfing!!!

Kite beach (East Coast):

• Kite beach offers various beach sections without any kite surfers or rocks for people to practice surfing on the east coast
• This Surf spot is located 10 to 15 mins away from the Surf centre by car and offers onshore wind conditions, which means small breaking waves and lots of white water with a little current that brings you directly back onto the beach
• Ideal for people for learning to surf / practising beginner level surfing
• Transportation can be organised by the Surf centre with pick up. Round trip costs Euro 20

Other spots:

• Sal's west coast has loads of surf spots for advanced surfers. Mainly isolated and accessible only by 4x4 vehicles, these surf spots are almost exclusively for people who want to rent surf boards and surf at their own risk & only be after having checked the peron’s level in one of the above mentioned Surf spots first!
