Location information:

Barbados is at the easternmost point of the Caribbean islands and is known as the "gateway to the West Indies".

Known as the "little England of the Caribbean" because of its British influence, Barbados is a relatively flat coral island with an abundance of fine, grain sandy beaches.

In some areas, notably the North, coral and Sandstone cliffs rise straight out of the sea reaching several hundred feet in height.

In the South-West, cliffs of 50 to 100 feet rise and fall along the coast, separated by small sandy beaches and bays.

The East and North coasts of Barbados face the Atlantic Ocean and bare the brunt of the large Atlantic waves that pound the shores.

Silver Rock Beach

• Right next to Silver Sands, is a fine sandy beach about 350m long, offering ideal conditions for kite surfing lessons
• As the beach is much wider than Silver Sands Beach and there are no trees on its fringe, it is well suited to beginner kite surf lessons. 90% of kite surfing lessons are held here

Silver Sands Beach

• Expert kitesurfers ONLY (riding upwind - level 3), launch here and kitesurf in the area in front of the kitesurfing centre up to the first reef
• As the waves break relatively slowly and peel gradually from the top, they are also very well suited to “surfing kite” riding. These characteristics make this spot an excellent all-round venue, for Kitesurfing.

Surf spots in Barbados:

Silver Sands:

• Good, safe location for teaching take off and first experiences on a surf board if the waves are small
• The waves break about 20m from shore making it a safe place to teach surfing with a sand sea bed
• On bigger days the current can be too strong for learning to surf so on these days teaching is done at other surf spots such as South Point, Freights Bay and Long Beach

South Point:

• Great left hand wave for surfing on most days. On big days South Point is more suited to advanced surfers but on average to small days it's a great spot to learn to surf. The waves break not too far off shore so paddling distance is limited which makes it suitable for beginner surfers and children with the right conditions
• Only 10 mins walk from the centre or 3 mins by car

Freights Bay:

• There is no current and mainly a sandy sea bed. This is the ideal location for teaching children to surf and absolute beginners. In the winter conditions are suitable for surfing most of the time making it a popular destination for learning to surf. Approximately 15 - 20 mins walk from Silver Sands or 5 mins by car

Long Beach + Kayakers Point:

• These surf spots are used on days with smaller swells. There are waves almost every day. Wave breaks close to shore so surfing is easy and safe. When the waves are small currents are slow which makes it easier for learning to surf

At the southern tip of the island, right at the beach and very close to the Club Mistral centre. The capital (Bridgetown) is only 30mins away (by shuttle bus, for which a fare is charged)

• The main building houses the reception and lobby area
• You can dine in style or have a snack in the 2 restaurants. The beach bar is open from 09:00 to 00:00 daily

Other things to do in Barbados:

Exploring Barbados is an absolute must in order to appreciate the full beauty of this island, you will be captivated not only by the fine-grained sandy white beaches of the west coast but also by the rugged east coast

There are fantastic opportunities for Windsurfing, Kitesurfing, surfing and snorkelling in magnificently clear water and relaxing on beautiful sandy beaches

By the time the sun disappears at around 6.30pm and you have let off enough steam on the water, the hustle and bustle of fish markets has already begun. Locals chop up the days catch with their machetes, freshly caught fish sizzle on grills & BBQs everywhere, Reggae music, and the fun-loving, friendly locals give the place a warm, relaxed atmosphere.

Barbados nightclubs are mainly located in St Lawrence Gap and along Bay Street, and feature live entertainment most of the week. Most bands play local music - calypso and reggae but there are several excellent R&B bands and lots of international music.

Alternatively you can get a little romantic with a cruise along the east of Barbados with the one you love, watching the starlit sky. Scheduled cruises or even evening catamaran charters can be arranged just for two
